Currently, lithium-ion batteries serve as power sources in various application systems. Low impurity rates in lithium salts are essential to battery performance and safety. Battery manufacturers want assurance that they will receive lithium salts with consistent purity from batch to batch. 

What are the problems associated with lithium hydroxide?

Lithium hydroxide is highly hygroscopic and reactive towards carbon dioxide in the air. It undergoes a fast reaction which results in the formation of lithium carbonate. Lithium carbonate is generalized as an impurity for lithium-ion batteries because lithium carbonate formation causes obstructions for further production steps. This necessitates an isolation system while storing and handling lithium hydroxide. 

Why to use Inmotion autosampler for purity determination?

By creating a standard solution from lithium hydroxide samples, the presence of lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate can be determined by an acid-base titration in a single titration step using hydrochloric acid as a titrant.  

To facilitate sample isolation and prevent the formation of lithium carbonate, the sampling procedure is fully automated using InMotion™. Automation not only provides environmental control and protection during analysis but also eliminates transcription errors.

The InMotion™ Autosampler is designed to create flexible workflows and efficient analysis. Prevention of lithium carbonate formation is ensured using an aluminum foil cap for the titration beaker. This sealed cap can be perforated just prior to analysis, thus prohibiting the interaction of lithium hydroxide with the atmosphere to avoid incorporating impurities into the precursor salts used in lithium-ion batteries.
